Year 5 + 6 – Sports in the Summer

Active Wrexham Community Football & Cricket sessions

@ Gwersyllt MUGA

Football & cricket sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons at Gwersyllt MUGA (behind Gwersyllt Cricket Clubhouse, LL11 4DX) ran by Active Wrexham & Cricket Wales & in partnership with North Wales Police, working with local PSCO’s.

The football session will take place 4.00-5.00pm.

The cricket session will take place 5.00-6.00pm.

The aim of the sessions is to give young people the chance to engage in positive behaviour within a community setting.

The sessions will run throughout the 6 weeks summer holiday, starting on 24th July until 28th August. If popular, we will look to continue the session beyond this.

It will be a turn up & play session & there will be no cost involved. The pitch at The Muga is concrete so trainers will need to be worn.

Young people can join the sessions at any time, during the summer holidays & can attend either one of the sessions or both.

You must be aged between 9-14 (school years 5-9).

The QR Code below will take you to a consent form on a website called Upshot. This form will just needed to be completed once with the young person’s information.

Please click on the green writing under the main heading to switch the form to English.

If you have signed up previously, there is no need to sign up again.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The penultimate week before the summer holidays is over. This week has been filled with activity and there is plenty to look forward to next week.

This Week

A huge thank you to all of you that joined us for the Year 1 and 2 Event on Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately, it stayed dry and we were able to work across the hall and the top yard. The pupils seemed to thoroughly enjoy the event. Thank you to the teachers for putting it together and to all the external agencies that came and supported it too.

Our Cricket team also made it to Colwyn Bay for the finals on Wednesday. They did themselves proud, winning two of their games, and, as always, behaved impeccably.

Finally, our Healthy and confident Senedd groups ran the KS2 sports event this Friday and our Enterprising and creative group held the school history event at home time. It is lovely seeing things that the pupils dream up coming to fruition.

Wrexham FC

We are trying to gather photos for our Wrexham FC board in school. If you have any photographs of your child wearing the kit, at the stadium or meeting the players and are happy to have it posted on the display wall we would really appreciate it being emailed over or sent in. A huge thank you in advance.

Next Week

Next week, being our final week, means we will be holding our Olivia Wood Assembly (Monday) and out Attendance and Pupil of the Term awards Assemblies. We will also have house treats and ice cream organised by the PTA on the Friday. A reminder that our Year 6 Leaver’s service takes place at 6pm on Thursday.

Friday 19th of July

Uniform – Friday the 19th is NOT a non-uniform day and pupils will be expected to wear full uniform.  Thank you.

Shirt Signing – Next Friday all Year 6 pupils will be allowed to bring a spare shirt/t-shirt in for signing if they wish.

Also, assuming that the weather is ok, we will be placing items of lost property on the yard next week. Please do take the time to have a look through if your child has lost something.

Have a great weekend,

Uned Glasbren

As promised please see the inside of our new Early Year layout for Nursery and Reception- now called Uned Glasbren (Saplings Unit).

We are trialling this for the start of September.

Message – 5.7.24 – please see end for a wonderful video- well done all involved

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The end of an incredibly busy week. To name but a few things this week (even though it is one day shorter) the school and the pupils have:

  • Been to Park Hall Farm (Reception)
  • Visited the Eisteddfod (All of KS2)
  • Choir performing in Llangollen (Mr Edwards and a team of pupils)
  • Nursery and new Nursery Teddy Bears picnic and sports event
  • 6 Year 6 pupils and Mrs O’Toole speaking in a Ted Talk at Wrexham university – Please see below
  • Planned alongside the Arts Curriculum for a Year 6 project next September.
  • Eventually had Year 5/6 sports day
  • Been to YBA Summer Fair (Year 5)
  • Enjoyed the School Disco (everyone)

As always, thank you to the PTA for their time and effort for the disco. A huge thank you to everyone involved for everything else (Parents, Staff and, of course, the pupils). Diolch!

End of School Day

Today I have spoken to the pupils about the importance of moving from the school grounds quickly after school. A few pupils have got into the habit of playing on the park and the lower football pitch at the end of the day. In itself this isn’t a problem. However, in order to secure the site to allow Playmates to function as it should, we are required to lock the side gates as well as the entry gates (the front gate to reception is the exception) so Playmates (and any other clubs) can run safely. Can I ask that adults picking up help us with this. Thank you in advance.

Unversity Ted Talk

I am very proud to be able to show you the TED TALK led by 6 pupils and Mrs O’Toole this week. Very powerful and incredibly impressive I am sure you will agree.

EY unit

You may be aware that, next year, we will be altering our Early Years provision. We will become a Nursery and Recpetion class in the morning (Reception only in the afternoon) and will be called Uned Glasbren Welsh for Saplings). This will be trialled from next week onwards to allow pupils in Nursery to get use to this and the teachers to iron out any kinks or hurdles. We believe it is going to be a fantastic asset and we are looking forward to seeing it bear fruit (pun inteneded).

As soon a possible, I will add photos.

Have a lovely weekend

Message 21.6.24

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Finally some nice weather. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed being out on the field over the past week and enjoying our grounds in all their splendour. It has been lovely to see.

Let’s hope it lasts for the summer fair on Saturday and beyond.

All being well you should receive a text this afternoon about your child’s class next year. On Friday 28th June your child will spend the majority of the day in their new class with their new staff. We have extended this process to a whole day to give the pupils more of an overall experience to what next year will be like.

As you may be aware, next year we will have a mixed Year 2 and 3 class (Masarnen). These pupils will follow the timetable of the others in their year group. This being the case, Year 2 pupils will eat and play with the other Year 2 pupils at lunch and will finish the school day at 3pm. Year 3 pupils will finish, as all Year 3 pupils do, at 3.10pm. Further information about pick up will come out prior to September but very little will change.

Outside Areas

One of our priorities this year has been to improve the look and use of our outside areas. Thank you to all of those that donated items such as planters, pallets and tyres to our Year 1 and 2 classes. The results are really starting to blossom (pun intended)

Senedd

Our Senedd groups are starting to bear fruit. Our Healthy and confident group are looking to plan a sport day in Ks2 to continue to drive the message that exercise and nutrition is a key factor in our physical and mental welbeing. We are hoping that this will take place on July 12th.

On the same day our enterprising and creative group are hoping to put on an afterschool event, looking at the history of school. More information is to follow.

Have a great weekend, hopefully we will see you at the fair.

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Nursery

Thank you to everyone who cam to our nursery event this morning. I think we can all agree the class made the room look stunnig. We hope you enjoyed it. Please see photos below.

Teacher Alterations for Next Year

With roughly a half term remaining of this academic year, I felt I should make you aware of a couple of temporary teaching alterations for next academic year (2024-2025).

I am delighted to say that Mr D Edwards in Year 4/5 has been accepted on to a Welsh professional development course which is carried out over the entirety of next year. Due to this, Mr D Edwards will not be teaching a class next year. He will however be in school frequently as part of the course. I have no doubt that this will benefit the school in the long run and we wish Mr Edwards all the best in September when it commences.

With this in mind, Mrs C Sailes will step into the Year 4/5 teaching position and Miss K Jones will work alongside Mrs H Davies in the Year 3/4 classes. Year 3/4 and Year 4/5 will all plan alongside each other next year.

Mrs K Jones is no stranger to the school having taught this year in our Year 1 and 2 classes and she will know next year’s Year 3 group very well (as will Mrs H Davies). We know she will do a wonderful job. Mrs S Binnersly is joining us in Year 1/2 to teach a day in each class. We extend a warm welcome to her in advance of September.

Sports Days

We hope to have our sports days on the following dates.

Monday 10th June- Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

Tuesday 11th June- Year 3 and 4

Friday 21st June- Year 5 and 6

They are due to start at approximately 1.30pm. All the above will be weather permitting. More information will be provided nearer the time.

Message- 10.5.24

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A couple of lovely events this week. We had our monthly visit to Pendine for a group of Year 6 pupils. This really is a wonderful partnership and I know the pupils bring such happiness to the residents there.

We had a visit from M&M productions on Wednesday. They performed The Little Princess and all the pupils from Year 2 upwards thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Speaking of the arts, It is lovely to see some of Dosbarth Masarnen’s peace Garden creative planters and flowers in Noddfa’s yard. IF you get the chance to have a look by the back yard. This was given by the class has a gift from one site to another. I look forward to seeing what grows from this.

New Waste Law – April 2024

You may be aware that from the 6th April, it became law for all businesses and public sector organisations to sort their waste for recycling. This has led to a reduction in general waste collections and an increase in recycling. If any children still bring packed lunches from home, they will now need to keep all of their waste from home in their lunchboxes to dispose of at home as the canteen is only disposing of food waste from school-provided meals. The children will be made aware of this change and we are using this as a learning opportunity for children to reduce their use of non-recyclable packaging.

Unbeatable Eva – May 17th – https://www.unbeatableeva.co.uk/

The school will be holding a non-uniform day on Friday May 17th for the Unbeatable Eva foundation. Unfortunately, Eva was diagnosed with DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), a little known but, in every case, terminal form of childhood cancer. Sadly, Eva passed away and her parents have set up a foundation to raise awareness and support other children and families with DIPG. The family are local to Wrexham and have reached out to the school to help support this foundation. The school Council would like to raise money by wearing purple (Eva’s favourite colour) or bight clothes on this day. As this is not going through school all donations can be cash on the day. Many thanks

Kitchen Environmental Health survey

Well done again to Alyson and the team who were successfully awarded a score of 5/5 in the kitchen inspection this week.

Enjoy the weather, stay safe and see you next week

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Family engagement

Again, a huge thank you to all those that have attended our recent family events. They have been extremely well attended and on some occasions we haven’t been able to say yes to everyone due to the limited places we can offer. We have another coming up shortly. On Tuesday 14th May- 2pm-3pm– we are having a tea party for KS2 families and pupils. It will be an afternoon of tea, cake and craft. Again the places are limited so please get in touch soon if you are interested.

Breakfast Club

We are having a few issues with pupils being left for breakfast club prior to the booked slot. Obviously this presents an issue, as no one is there to look after the pupil and gates are open to the busy main road. Can we ask that pupils do not come before the slot that is booked (usually the 8.20am free slot) and if this is the case, that they have an adult wait with them.

Also a quick reminder that monies need to be paid via Parent Pay. Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash.

Leavers Service and Evening

I can’t believe we are getting to that time…Our Leavers service and celebration will take place on Thursday 18th July from 6pm to 8pm. This will include a celebration service followed by some time on the field (weather permitting)- hopefully with live music and a little more. More information to follow nearer the date.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are reaching the end of April and as I type this, the sun is streaming in through the windows. The lovely weather, when we get it, makes such a difference and reminds me of how lucky we are with the outside space that we have.

Year 1 and 2 have been working hard to redesign their outdoor continuous provision (thank you to all the donations for this) and over the past two weeks the pupils have started using it daily. Our Early Years space continues to provide such great opportunities for the pupils and our Ysgol Goedwig (Jaxon’s Wood) is a fabulous setting for our afternoon Forest Schools sessions.

Mrs O’Toole and I were lucky enough to be in and out of sessions this week (inside and outside of class), speaking to pupils, looking at their work and enjoying the activities they complete with them. I was really impressed – not only by their work, but their attitude to it and more so, the way they co-operated in class.

Speaking about working together, a huge thank you to all those that took part in the coffee mornings last Friday and Earth Day event on Monday. They were over-booked and packed occasions, but it was great to see the pupils enjoying time with you reading, completing craft and enjoying a drink.

Have a lovely weekend,

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A busy this week with a lot of activities going on

Save the planet

Dosbart Collen- Our Nursery class have been getting clued up on how to save our planet. This Friday, they created placards and marched around the school to spread the word. It was difficult not to get swept up in their rally and we are looking at what we can do to increase our success in recycling. Watch this space.

Scooter sessions

Many of our pupils in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed the opportunity to learn skills on their scooters this week. On Wednesday morning Hannah from Active journeys worked with 30 pupils teaching the tips, trick and technics to drive better and with more safety on their scooters. We were fortunate that the weather stayed relatively dry for the morning and the pupils enjoyed them thoroughly.

Diversity Lessons

Our Police school Liaison Officer PC Stu came in on Tuesday to work with our older pupils looking at Diversity and Race. He spoke with Year 5 and Year 6 separately focussing on differences, similarities and tolerance and understanding. As always the pupils benefitted greatly from PC Stu’s sessions and experience.

Coffee Morning

Finally, thank you those that came in for the Coffee morning. We had a good attendance and pupils and parents were able to share the opportunity to enjoy some crafts with a warm drink in hand. A huge diolch to those who came.

Have a lovely weekend
